The Future of the Internet Under Review: Key Takeaways from ICANN84

The ICANN84 debriefing session, organized by EURALO, offered an opportunity to summarize the main themes and discussions that shaped this year’s ICANN meeting. Held online, the event brought together experts from across ICANN’s advisory committees, supporting organizations, and Internet user groups.

The Lodz Cyber Hub, participating as an accredited ICANN At-Large Structure (ALS), highlighted its continued engagement in global Internet governance processes and its commitment to safeguarding user interests.

Main Themes from ICANN84

The first part of the meeting reviewed the major issues discussed during ICANN84, including:

  • efforts to strengthen the security and stability of the Domain Name System (DNS);
  • developments related to the evolution of the multistakeholder model;
  • human rights considerations and user interests in DNS policy development;
  • initiatives for community engagement in Europe and globally;
  • the technical community’s perspective on the resilience of Internet infrastructure;
  • reflections on the effectiveness of cooperation across ICANN groups.

These topics underscored the need for improved coordination, data-driven decision-making, and a stronger end-user voice—priorities that align closely with the mission of the Łódź Cyber Hub.

The Upcoming gTLD Round

The second part focused on preparations for the next round of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), one of ICANN’s most significant forthcoming initiatives. The discussion addressed:

  • transparency in the application process;
  • measures to strengthen user trust;
  • the importance of public-interest commitments;
  • balancing innovation with responsible governance of new domains.

Participants agreed that user perspectives must remain central as work progresses toward the new gTLD round. The Łódź Cyber Hub actively supports this effort by promoting community education and participation in ICANN policy processes. Participation in the ICANN84 debrief reaffirms that the Lodz Cyber Hub continues to strengthen its role in European and global debates on the future of the Internet. As the sole ICANN-accredited ALS in Central Europe, the Hub advocates for a secure, stable, and open Internet and represents end-user interests within and beyond ICANN.
